Mamuju, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) – The Search and Rescue office (Basarnas) of Mamuju, West Sulawesi Province, evacuated several residents whose homes were affected by flooding and landslides triggered by incessant heavy rains on Sunday.
In Dusun Bambu, 45 people comprising 11 senior citizens, 15 adults, and 19 children were moved to higher ground, Mamuju Basarnas Head Muhammad Arif Anwar stated.
“In Tadui Village, Manalise Hamlet, the joint SAR team managed to evacuate a resident, who had climbed a tree to save himself from the flood,” he remarked.
The resident stayed on a tree for five hours before being successfully evacuated at 20:30 local time.
In the Sese neighborhood, the SAR team also evacuated 45 residents, comprising three toddlers, three elderly people, and 39 adults.
“Several children were also successfully evacuated from three housing estates in the Sese neighborhood,” he stated.
The joint SAR team also evacuated six people comprising one elderly, two adults, and three children from Gatot Subroto Street, Karema Village.
“Hence, the rescue operation for those affected by the flood disaster in Mamuju District today is conducted at three points, to evacuate 96 people. They were evacuated to temporary shelters,” he added.
Landslides also hit several parts of Mamuju, including in Bukit Dayang in Timbu area, and Bambu Village.
The heavy rains triggered several rivers, including Sese, Mamuju and Karema, to overflow their banks following incessant heavy rains on Sunday.
