Semen Baturaja readies 100,000 liters of water daily for fires

Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA) – PT Semen Baturaja Tbk (SMBR) is preparing up to 100 cubic meters, or 100,000 liters, of water daily to support efforts to tackle forest and land fires in South Sumatra.

“This assistance reflects the company’s concern for joint efforts to tackle forest and land fires in South Sumatra,” Senior Manager of CSR David Irwanto said here Sunday.

He said the water supply could be used for firefighting based on coordination with relevant authorities, while taking into account the company’s operational requirements.

“The capacity is equivalent to 100,000 liters of water daily and is part of the company’s preparedness to support environmental emergency response,” he said.

In addition to water, the company has provided financial assistance to the South Sumatra chapter of the Muhammadiyah Youth Force Preparedness Command (KOKAM) to support volunteer firefighting operations.

“This reflects the company’s concern for joint efforts to tackle forest and land fires, particularly by involving community groups that voluntarily work directly in the field,” he said.

SMBR recognizes that tackling forest and land fires requires collaboration and support from multiple parties, prompting the company to provide funding to KOKAM South Sumatra and its volunteer firefighting teams.

“We hope the assistance will help meet operational needs while supporting volunteers in carrying out their duties to tackle and extinguish forest and land fires,” he said.

David said the company’s support was aimed not only at preventing fires from spreading but also at protecting environmental sustainability and biodiversity around its operational areas.

“What we are protecting from the threat of forest and land fires is not only the land, but also the ecosystems within it. Vegetation, wildlife, and biodiversity must be protected,” he said.

He added that forest and land fires could disrupt community activities and reduce air quality while damaging vegetation, destroying habitats, and threatening flora and fauna within ecosystems.

“Therefore, preventing and tackling forest and land fires is considered an important part of maintaining ecosystem balance and environmental sustainability,” he said.

SMBR also urged communities and stakeholders to increase vigilance against potential forest and land fires, particularly during the dry season.

“We believe prevention and preparedness must be strengthened collectively to reduce fire risks while protecting the environment and biodiversity. With resource readiness and cross-sector collaboration, SMBR will continue contributing to communities and the environment in line with its sustainability commitment,” he said.
