Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has warned residents of potential tidal flooding along six Bali coastal areas from Aug. 11-17 as lunar activity could raise maximum sea levels.
The six areas are southern Jembrana, southern Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar and southern Klungkung, said Cahyo Nugroho, head of the agency’s Denpasar regional office, on Monday.
“The cause is the moon’s perigee phase,” he said, adding that the moon reached its closest point to Earth on Aug. 10, followed by a new moon on Aug. 13, potentially raising maximum sea levels along parts of Bali’s coast.
The timing of maximum tides will vary by day and hour across the affected areas, Cahyo said.
Tidal flooding could disrupt cargo loading and unloading at ports, coastal settlements, salt farms and inland fishing activities, he said.
The agency urged residents to monitor the latest weather information through BMKG social media accounts @infobmkg and @bmkgbali, the Info BMKG app, and its websites.
