Sports minister backs promoters hosting preseason matches in Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has voiced support for private promoter companies bringing preseason matches of foreign football clubs to Indonesia.

“The more international events held in Indonesia, the greater the economic impact and benefits felt by the national sports ecosystem,” Thohir said in an official statement here on Friday.

He welcomed a number of preseason matches being held in Jakarta throughout August 2026. On August 1, English Premier League club Aston Villa played a preseason match against Indonesia All Stars at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Senayan, Jakarta.

Next, two European giants, AC Milan and Chelsea, will face off at SUGBK on Saturday (August 8). At the end of August, Australian club Brisbane Roar will also visit the home ground of Jakarta football club Persija.

Thohir said the presence of these clubs, including European giants, reflects a positive trend showing that Indonesia’s football atmosphere and sports industry are gaining greater global recognition.

He said the government gives promoters the freedom to exercise their creativity in presenting high-quality and entertaining matches for the public.

He said the presence of international clubs brings positive impacts far beyond the matches themselves.

According to him, the matches also drive the national sports industry, from organizing promoters and the tourism, hospitality, and transportation sectors to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), while creating a world-class experience for Indonesian football fans.

He also praised the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) for continuing to provide space for various international club matches while keeping its main focus on building the achievements of the Indonesian national team.

“This synergy is important, where developing achievements goes hand in hand with the growth of Indonesia’s football industry,” he said.
