Sumatran tiger footprints found near settlements in Kampar

Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) – The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA Riau) is stepping up efforts to prevent human-wildlife conflict after confirming Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) footprints near the Bangkinang Ring Road in Kampar District.

Head of the agency’s Technical Division Ujang Holisudin said field personnel inspected the site following reports from local residents.

“A team from the nearest conservation field post was dispatched to inspect the location. Our on-site verification confirmed that the tracks indeed belong to a Sumatran tiger,” Holisudin said here on Tuesday.

He added that conservation officers were tracking the critically endangered animal to map its movements.

Precautionary measures have been stepped up because the footprints were found near community plantations and residential areas.

To reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict, determine the number of tigers in the area, and monitor their movement patterns, BBKSDA Riau is preparing to install camera traps at strategic locations.

“The team is currently preparing to install camera traps around the location,” he said.

The agency has urged residents around Bangkinang Ring Road to remain vigilant during outdoor activities, particularly after dark or sunset.

Authorities also warned residents against setting snares or attempting to hunt the protected animal, as such actions could injure or kill it.

“We continue to coordinate with village officials and the local government to monitor the area. We strongly urge members of the community to immediately alert authorities if they spot further signs of the tiger’s presence,” Holisudin said.
