Mataram (ANTARA) – Officials in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province have established a dedicated task force to oversee recovery efforts after a major fire devastated the historic Sade Traditional Village on Lombok Island.
The blaze, which broke out Saturday evening, destroyed 75 traditional homes, a mosque, eight thatched-roof granaries, and nearly 70 local craft shops. According to the regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the disaster displaced approximately 320 residents across 120 families.
The task force was created following direct orders from West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal to coordinate relief efforts and expedite the restoration of the cultural landmark.
“The team’s primary responsibility is to accelerate recovery, coordinate rehabilitation plans, and delegate tasks across relevant government agencies,” BPBD chief Sadimin said in Mataram on Monday.
Local authorities in Central Lombok Regency estimate total damages at 35 billion rupiah ($2.1 million), though provincial agencies are still conducting a formal assessment.
In addition to homes and shops, the fire destroyed several traditional wooden gathering pavilions (berugak) and public tourism infrastructure.
Disaster teams have set up emergency tents, tarpaulins, and relief supplies on-site.
Governor Iqbal assured that the provincial government will cover basic necessities and fund the education of affected children during the recovery phase.
“The immediate priority is ensuring that all residents are safe,” Iqbal said, emphasizing that long-term assistance will extend beyond emergency shelter to guarantee food security, clothing, and housing restoration for all affected families.
