Teacher certification conducted through professional education program

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) has said that the scheme for teacher certification is being carried out through teacher professional education (PPG).

“In accordance with the mandate of Government Regulation (PP) 74/2008, in conjunction with PP 19/2017 regarding teachers, the teacher certification scheme is being carried out through PPG, both in and out of office,” acting director of teacher professional education at the Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel of the ministry Temu Ismail said here on Wednesday.

For in-service teachers, PPG is being carried out through the in-service teacher certification program, he explained. The in-service teacher certification program is being carried out with a learning load of 36 credits and is being conducted by the Institute of Educators and Education Personnel (LPTK), which has been determined by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology (Ditjen Diktiristek) as the organizer of PPG.

“Currently, there are 79 LPTKs that organize PPG. Before 2021, PPG’s target is only for teachers whose term of office is calculated until December 2015,” he informed.

In 2022, the PPG targets have been divided into two categories:those with past learning recognition (RPL) of 24 credits so they need 12 credits of learning, while the second category comprises those with 18 credits of RPL so they need 18 credits of learning.

He explained that category one is for teachers whose tenure is up to 2015, and category two is for teachers whose tenure is from January 1, 2016, and above, with a minimum service period of three years.

“In addition, for teachers who used to take educator certificates through PLPG but have not passed the national written test or competency test, they can take the in-service teacher certification program,” Ismail said.

The quota targets for in-service PPGs in 2022 are 40,530 teachers for category one, 36,390 teachers for category two, and 12,527 former PLPGs currently participating in data verification and validation.

Meanwhile, novice teacher candidates who will replace teachers retiring in 2022 will need to follow the Pre-service PPG scheme. In the future, Ismail said he hopes that the number of prospective teachers will be fulfilled both in terms of quantity and quality.

“So that the appointment of teachers can be done since they become novice teacher candidates who are professional Pre-service PPG graduates or those who meet the requirements,” he said.
