Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Prosecutors in Bali are seeking eight-year prison sentences for two Thai women accused of smuggling 308.25 grams of hashish from Thailand to the Indonesian resort island.
Prosecutor I Gede Gatot Hariawan told the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday that the defendants violated Indonesia’s criminal and narcotics laws.
“We ask the panel of judges to sentence each defendant to eight years in prison,” Hariawan said before a panel led by Judge Kusuma Wardhani.
Prosecutors also sought a 100 million rupiah (US$5,900) fine for each defendant, with a 60-day prison term if the fine is not paid.
The defendants, accompanied by an interpreter and defense lawyers, said they would submit written defenses at the next hearing on September 8.
The case began on March 10, when customs officers detained Mayuree Prasomtong and Nontiya Janpechat at Ngurah Rai International Airport after they arrived on Thai AirAsia flight FD398F from Don Mueang, Thailand.
Authorities became suspicious during an inspection. X-ray scans and searches of their bodies and luggage uncovered six packages of hashish hidden inside diapers worn by the defendants.
Prosecutors said officers found three packages on Mayuree weighing 156.88 grams gross, or 155.25 grams net.
Three packages found on Nontiya weighed 154.53 grams gross, or 153 grams net. The total seized weighed 311.41 grams gross, or 308.25 grams net.
The defendants told investigators they hid the packages in their diapers to avoid detection by airport officials.
Prosecutors said the hashish belonged to a person known as Juggernaught, also known as Kingkong, who remains on Indonesia’s wanted list.
The drugs were allegedly to be handed to Kingkong and Darren Granville Craig in Bali for joint use during their vacation. Craig is being prosecuted separately.
Prosecutors said the hashish was initially mailed to Mayuree’s home in Nonthaburi, Thailand. At Kingkong’s direction, the women opened the package and weighed about 600 grams.
They then divided the hashish into six bundles of about 50 grams each and rewrapped them in plastic wrap before hiding them in their underwear they were wearing.
The remaining hashish was kept at Mayuree’s home in Thailand, prosecutors said.
The trial also heard the women admitted they had previously brought narcotics to Bali.
In December 2025, they allegedly delivered a package containing a thick yellow liquid resembling honey to Craig at his request.
Forensic laboratory tests confirmed that all seized evidence contained hashish, classified as a Category I narcotic under Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law.
