Maros, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) has confirmed that the crew of a Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighter jet is safe after the aircraft overran the western runway at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros District, South Sulawesi.
The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. local time (WITA; GMT+8) on Monday during a simulated take-off. The exercise was part of a series of test flights following a major maintenance overhaul.
Air Force spokesperson First Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana confirmed that no injuries were reported.
“The aircraft and all crew members are safe,” Suadnyana said in an official statement.
He explained that a technical issue arose during the simulation. “The braking system failed to function optimally, causing the aircraft to overshoot the end of the runway by 30 meters,” he said.
Following the incident, the aircraft was immediately towed back to a maintenance hangar for a thorough inspection before it can resume its subsequent testing phases.
Acting Head of the Branch Communication and CSR Department at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport Taufan Yudhistira confirmed the incident, noting that airport authorities and the Air Force managed the emergency response and cleanup.
Despite the incident, overall operations and commercial flights at the airport continued to run normally without disruption.
