Jakarta (ANTARA) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Jakarta reflects the international community’s deep respect for Indonesia and its constructive engagement in global affairs, Foreign Affairs Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said.
Nasir said Guterres had affirmed that his official visit was an expression of appreciation for Indonesia’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism, which the country had consistently demonstrated throughout his tenure as UN secretary-general.
“This is a recognition of President Prabowo’s leadership and Indonesia’s active role on the world stage,” Nasir said during a joint press statement following the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta on Monday.
Nasir noted that as Guterres approaches the end of his second term, the UN chief is visiting only a select number of countries, making Indonesia’s inclusion a distinct privilege.
“You came to pay tribute to Indonesia. Today, Indonesia pays tribute to you,” Nasir told Guterres.
Nasir commended Guterres for his steadfast leadership in guiding the United Nations through nearly a decade of complex and unprecedented geopolitical tensions.
“Secretary-General, you have steered the UN through some of the most difficult times,” Nasir said, adding that Guterres had tirelessly reminded the international community that diplomatic dialogue must never cease, even “when the world stops listening.”
The minister also expressed his deep appreciation for Guterres’ leadership, friendship, and courage throughout his tenure at the United Nations.
During his visit to Indonesia, Guterres held a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto, visited the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Peacekeeping Center in Bogor, West Java, and delivered a keynote address on multilateralism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Guterres’ second five-year term as UN secretary-general is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. His successor is set to take office on January 1, 2027.
Under Article 97 of the UN Charter, the secretary-general is appointed by the UN General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
