Universities urged to boost role in knowledge creation amid AI era

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science, and Technology Ministry has urged universities to strengthen their role as centers of knowledge creation, dissemination and human-resource development in the artificial intelligence era.

Deputy Minister Stella Christie said Friday that advances in AI were fundamentally changing many aspects of life, including higher education.

“AI’s ability to acquire, process and present information quickly is prompting universities to review their core role in developing people and advancing knowledge,” Christie said.

She said the challenge for universities was no longer simply how to convey information and facts to students.

Universities must also develop people capable of creating knowledge and determining its value and meaning, she said.

Christie urged academics to respond critically to advances in AI.

“The tendency to use AI-based solutions for almost every problem must be examined carefully, so universities do not simply follow technology but understand the purpose and consequences of its use,” she said.

She acknowledged that AI offers major opportunities in research, mathematics, business and education.

However, AI use must be accompanied by the ability to set objectives, assess relevance and curate its output so it can genuinely solve problems and benefit people, she said.

Christie stressed that people remain central to knowledge creation at universities, while AI can help process information, analyze data and identify patterns.

She said universities must ensure people retain the ability to ask fundamental questions and generate new knowledge.

“Universities are where we share knowledge, from professors to students, among students and from students to society,” she said.
