Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the livelihood of Indonesian veterans as the country commemorated National Veterans’ Day on Monday.

“The Defense Ministry, the Defense Minister, and others will strive to improve it continually,” Lieutenant General Gabriel Lema, Chief of the National Reserve Agency, said after a visit to Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta.

He said that the government is determined to provide all the needs of the veterans through the Veterans’ Legion of Indonesia (LVRI), which is led by General (Ret.) Mantiri.

As LVRI continues its contribution to Indonesia, the Defense Ministry stands ready to synchronize its operations and agenda with the veterans’ association.

“We will ensure that their needs are met, as it is our responsibility as the next generation to carry forward the contributions they have made to our nation,” Lieutenant General Lema stated.

While praying for the veterans to enjoy a long life, Lema expressed hope that their nationalism, patriotism, and commitment to the nation will be carried forward to the younger generation.

Meanwhile, LVRI Central Committee Chairperson General (Ret.) Mantiri welcomed the Defense Ministry’s commitment to improving the lives of Indonesian veterans.

“We do hope the improvement will continue year by year. It is very meaningful to us; we thank you,” the retired general remarked.

To commemorate National Veterans’ Day, which falls on August 10, the Defense Ministry organized a visit to Kalibata Heroes Cemetery to pay respect to late heroes and war veterans. The agenda followed the health charity event for veterans at the Defense Ministry on August 4.

The National Veterans’ Day main event will be presided over by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoedin on Wednesday (August 12).
