Jakarta (ANTARA) – Several flights to Jakarta are planned to be diverted to Kertajati Airport in West Java following volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, where passengers will continue their journey by buses and the Whoosh high-speed train.
This was conveyed by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya on Sunday, adding that due to the evolving situation surrounding the volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, flight adjustments will be made, including the temporary suspension of Soekarno-Hatta Airport operations.
“Several flights to Jakarta, particularly those from Garuda, have been diverted to Kertajati Airport in West Java. Bus and Whoosh services will be prepared from Kertajati to Jakarta,” Teddy informed.
He further noted that the state-owned railway company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, has also added trains to Jakarta from Surabaya, Malang, Semarang, and Yogyakarta, where airports are currently operating normally.
To reduce health risks from volcanic ash, he advised the public to wear masks and goggles when outdoors. He also reminded people to wash their hands and face after coming inside and to wet the body before wiping off ash.
Previously, the Ministry of Transportation announced that six airports were temporarily closed due to the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
The airports include Radin Inten Airport in Lampung, Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Pondok Cabe Airport, Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang, and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung.
According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the continuous eruption earthquake of Anak Krakatau began on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:07 p.m. and ended on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 12:04 a.m. local time.
Although the continuous eruption has ended, Mount Anak Krakatau remains active, with a relatively high risk of further eruptions that could cause incandescent rock ejections, heavy ashfall, and lava flows.
