Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Workshop on Managing Potential Conflicts in the South China Sea has generated positive and concrete achievements, an official stated.
“The workshop has generated positive and concrete achievements,” Head of the Foreign Policy Agency Strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Yayan G.H. Mulyana noted during the opening of the 31st Workshop on Managing Potential Conflict in the South China Sea in Jakarta, on Wednesday.
“Today, we organize the 31st Workshop as the second Workshop on Managing Potential Conflicts in the South China Sea during the Covid-19 pandemic time,” he remarked.
The workshop is a platform to witness that over three decades have passed since the first workshop held in 1990 in Bali, Indonesia.
He noted that for the last three decades, the workshop had proven to be a historical witness despite the unpredictable changing world and evolving regional landscape.
“Participants have been showing strong and enduring commitments, working together, and exploring potential cooperation in the South China Sea region,” Mulyana stated.
Since the first workshop, this 1.5 track dialogue has become an invaluable forum where discussions and sharing of information and experiences have occurred in a cordial and transparent manner, aimed at promoting peace, stability, prosperity, and most importantly, friendship and cooperation in the South China Sea region.
“From the previous highlights, we can see that there are at least three broad categories of areas of cooperation,” he stated.
The first area of cooperation pertains to climate and the environment that encompassed cooperation on addressing marine pollution, promoting marine protection and conservation, as well as monitoring sea level changes and sea tide.
“Second, science and technology through various works on marine scientific research, marine and geoscience database, and cooperation on marine information technology,” he noted.
The third area of cooperation is economic and development aspects that included fisheries stock assessment, sustainable islands development, and geo-tourism.
