Jakarta (ANTARA) – Russian President Vladimir Putin described Indonesia as one of Moscow’s key partners in the Asia-Pacific region and a trusted friend within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Speaking at a luncheon with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian leader for attending the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) as a guest of honor.
“I am very pleased. Our personal rapport reflects the strategic nature of the bilateral relations between Russia and Indonesia,” Putin said.
The Russian leader noted the two countries’ long-standing friendship and their active efforts to expand bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, which grew by 12 percent in volume last year.
He added that the Russia-Indonesia Joint Commission on Economic, Trade, and Technical Cooperation remains actively engaged in those efforts.
Putin also highlighted the recent signing of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Beyond trade, Moscow is focused on expanding ties with Indonesia in agriculture, shipbuilding, digital technology, and energy, particularly nuclear power.
The Russian president also highlighted cooperation between the two countries across various international platforms, including the United Nations.
“I am confident that today’s meeting will provide a new catalyst for bilateral relations between our two countries,” he said.
In response, President Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation.
“Indonesia continues to strengthen cooperation in various fields to achieve mutual benefits for both of our countries,” Prabowo said during the event, which was broadcast on the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
The Vladivostok meeting follows the leaders’ previous engagement in Moscow in April. Their five-hour discussion focused on strengthening ties in the economy, energy, aerospace, agriculture, industry, and pharmaceuticals.
As a concrete follow-up to those earlier talks, the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) recently invited Russia’s state space corporation, Roscosmos, to discuss the potential development of a spaceport in Biak, Papua.
