Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) – Customs authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have stepped up baggage inspections and monitoring for all flight crews following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot caught smuggling tens of thousands of ecstasy pills into the country.
Hengky Tomuan Parlindungan Aritonang, head of the Soekarno-Hatta Customs and Excise Office, announced Saturday that random baggage checks will now be enforced on all flight crews utilizing special crew lanes at the major aviation hub near Jakarta.
“We are obligated to provide a dedicated lane for flight crews. Following this incident, we will conduct random checks on pilots and crew members,” Aritonang said, noting that the measure applies to both foreign nationals and Indonesian personnel.
He clarified that the screening focuses exclusively on baggage security, while drug testing remains under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and individual airlines.
The heightened security measures follow the arrest of a 39-year-old pilot, identified by the initials MS, who was flying Malaysia Airlines flight MH727 carrying 170 passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta.
Customs officers intercepted the pilot after discovering 14 packages containing 70,144 ecstasy pills—weighing over 25 kilograms—along with four grams of methamphetamine hidden under clothing inside his checked suitcase.
Authorities allege the suspect exploited crew privilege lanes to bypass standard passenger customs checks.
Subsequent drug tests revealed the pilot tested positive for MDMA, methamphetamine, and cocaine.
“This indicates he likely operated the flight while under the influence,” Aritonang said.
According to investigators, the pilot had previously smuggled narcotics on two other occasions, including a shipment of seven kilograms of methamphetamine to Jakarta.
For the latest operation, he was promised a payment of 50,000 Malaysian ringgit (approx. $11,800 USD) by an international drug syndicate organizer who remains under investigation.
