Jakarta (ANTARA) – A member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) urged the government to continue playing an active role in persuading the United States and Iran to end hostilities and help restore peace and stability.
“Indonesia must consistently call for an end to attacks and encourage all parties to exercise restraint,” DPR Commission I lawmaker Syamsu Rizal said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Sunday.
He emphasized the urgency of all parties avoiding a prolonged conflict and giving precedence to dialogue and diplomacy, highlighting the far-reaching impact of hostilities on communities around the world.
Rizal asserted that the exchanges of fire between the US and Iran could further exacerbate geopolitical tensions, which, in turn, would disrupt supply chains and drive up energy costs.
On that note, the legislator urged both sides “to prioritize diplomacy for the sake of stability and the safety of civilians.”
He said Indonesia has an opportunity to rally countries behind concerted efforts to end the conflict by leveraging its strategic position in international forums.
Moreover, Rizal emphasized that Indonesia is constitutionally mandated to contribute to building and maintaining world peace while promoting self-determination and social justice.
He also pressed the United Nations to facilitate negotiations between the US and Iran to prevent the conflict from spreading.
“Indonesia, alongside the UN and partner countries, must bring the US and Iran to the negotiation table. An immediate ceasefire is essential to curb casualties,” he remarked.
Further underscoring his appeal, the parliamentarian stressed that civilians typically bear the greatest burden of armed conflict.
“We cannot afford to let the war drag on. The world needs peace, not conflict escalation,” he concluded.
The Indonesian government has actively called for an end to the conflict to help restore stability in the region.
Foreign Minister Sugiono urged both the US and Iran to refrain from escalating tensions and honor the memorandum of understanding (MoU) they signed in Pakistan in June.
“An MoU has been signed, and we hope it will continue to be respected,” he told journalists after the 6th Indonesia-Vietnam Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation meeting in Jakarta on July 14.
He stressed that it is in Indonesia’s interest to restore stability in Iran and its surroundings, warning that a prolonged conflict could deal a severe blow to the economy. The minister added that the country’s “position remains unchanged,” with Indonesia continuing to call for the restoration of peace and stability through an end to hostilities.
