Jakarta to leverage AI technology in slum areas revitalization

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technology in urban planning as slum revitalization works in Central Jakarta are targeted for completion by 2028, Governor Pramono Anung stated.

The governor said that his administration plans to revitalize 2.3-kilometer slum areas spanning over Kampung Bali, Kebon Melati, and Kebon Kacang villages in Tanah Abang Sub-district, Central Jakarta.

“I want the areas to be overhauled and rejuvenated. I want the works to be complete in 2028,” Anung stated at a roundtable discussion on AI partnership between Indonesia and South Korea here on Thursday.

Artificial intelligence will be deployed to devise revitalization plans, ensure manageable implementation, and monitor area security, he said, while highlighting AI potentials in facilitating public services, data-based policymaking, and urban mobility management.

“Slum area issues can be resolved by AI’s help, and we can do it in Jakarta,” the governor stated.

Despite using advanced technology in urban planning, Anung also highlighted the need for human-oriented development by protecting residents’ rights to privacy, security, and digital inclusion.

The governor earlier disclosed that the provincial legislature had decided to proceed with the revitalization of slum areas in Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, and Kampung Bali during its plenary session.

“They have decided to improve conditions in Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, and Kampung Bali villages. Despite being very close to the Presidential Palace, the City Hall, and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, slum areas there can be considered among the worst,” he said.

Anung highlighted harsh living conditions in the area, with small houses accommodating up to 15 individuals in a family, forcing them to sleep in turns, and other areas left untouched by any improvement works for almost 6 decades.

“We want to thoroughly improve the areas,” the governor stressed.
