Jakarta (ANTARA) – Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate commended the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for its initiative in the Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) G20 event.

“Indonesia truly lauds the support from ITU, especially the Smart Village and Smart Island initiatives, as one of DEWG’s actual deliverables,” the minister made the statement at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP 22) in Bucharest, Romania, as quoted from a press release on Wednesday.

During the event, Indonesia praised ITU for being actively involved in contributing to the success of the DEWG G20, especially in the preparation of concrete deliverables.

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is committed to providing affordable and safe digital connectivity for everyone, he noted.

“Through the ITU 2022 Plenipotentiary, we list the results of the Digital Economy Working Group to ITU and the conference participants today,” Minister Plate remarked.

Indonesia, as the host of G20 this year, has paid attention to the segment of the global community that had yet to avail proper cyberspace services.

The G20 Presidency of Indonesia hosted a Digital Economic Ministerial Meeting (DEMM) in Bali from August 29 to September 5. At the event, its members came to a comprehensive agreement pertaining to the three priority issues brought up by the DEWG.

The three issues in question were connectivity and post-COVID-19 recovery; skills and digital literacy; and the free flow of data with trust and data across borders on an inclusive, empowering, and sustainable basis.

DEWG, supervised by the ministry, was one of the forums in the Sherpa Track of the Indonesian G20 Presidency.

A total of 193 ITU member countries participated in this year’s conference, the organization’s highest decision-making body.

ITU members would formulate an agreement on ITU’s strategic and financial plans, leadership, and direction for the next four years.
