Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) confirmed that there were no wave anomalies indicating a tsunami in the Sunda Strait following increased volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau.
“Based on 24-hour monitoring, we confirm there is no tsunami. Any reports of receding waves or unusually high waves are false,” Semeidi Husrin, a researcher at BRIN’s Research Center for Geological Disaster, said during a disaster-related discussion on Monday.
According to Husrin, the information was obtained through intensive monitoring using the Inexpensive Device for Sea Level Measurement (IDSL), which is installed in the Rakata Island area.
He explained that the BRIN-developed tsunami detection device, which relies on sea-level anomaly detection and rapid data transmission, is directly integrated into the early warning network operated by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Husrin said the heightened activity of Anak Krakatau, which spewed volcanic ash in early September, had briefly affected monitoring operations.
He said volcanic material covering the solar panels had hindered the device’s ability to fully recharge during the day, causing a temporary drop in the IDSL unit’s battery level.
However, monitoring data from the device showed no threat of tsunami waves resulting from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. To strengthen the early warning system against such natural hazards, BRIN is encouraging inter-agency cooperation to deploy additional monitoring devices that can complement one another.
“Therefore, an adequate number of additional IDSL units is needed. We need at least six units on Rakata Island and on each of the surrounding islands,” he said.
In addition to adding sea-level sensors on Sertung, Panjang and Rakata islands, BRIN is also prioritizing the repair of surveillance CCTV cameras to facilitate visual verification in the field.
Husrin said upgrading disaster-related infrastructure and regularly maintaining equipment would further strengthen preventive measures to protect coastal areas around Banten and Lampung.
