President Prabowo urges BRIN, universities to tackle village waste

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Chief Arif Satria said President Prabowo Subianto wants the agency to work with universities to improve household and village waste management.

Speaking at a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (Oct 27), Satria said Prabowo had made resolving Indonesia’s waste problem a priority, noting that developing countries face similar challenges.

“BRIN has been asked to work with the minister of higher education, science, and technology to mobilize universities to help villages manage waste using technology developed by BRIN and universities,” he said.

BRIN has waste-processing technologies designed for households, villages, subdistricts, and cities. Prabowo has directed BRIN to accelerate the deployment of technologies suited to households and villages, Satria added.

BRIN does not mass-produce the technologies, it develops prototypes intended for public use.

The initiative is also intended to support Prabowo’s Safe, Healthy, Clean and Beautiful (ASRI) Indonesia movement.

“We want to ensure our prototypes provide real benefits and can be used by communities, so the president’s ASRI movement can be implemented effectively and as intended,” Satria said.

Prabowo launched the ASRI movement to make Indonesia greener through planting trees and cleaner by reducing waste across the country.

Its priorities include managing waste from source to final disposal, converting waste into energy and applying the 3Rs, reduce, reuse and recycle.
